Abstract. This paper deals with the phenomenon of the substitution in secondary texts related to different level units. The research significance is determined by the relevant problem of the information flows organization in a competitive environment of informative news sources on the Internet. Initial information is perceived by the reader through a headline, a subtitle or a lead, therefore, the content formation of these secondary texts is an important aspect of the text production process. The desire to ensure that small format secondary texts are attention-grabbing and highly informative contributes to applying various substitution means that can convey key points of the source text in a concise form using minimal language units. The article aims to study the nature of substitutions used in such texts. In the theoretical part of the research the authors examine the derivational theory, which served as the basis for a comparative analysis of the main and derived texts, as well as for justifying the secondary text types specifics designated as the object of study. Addressing scientific and practical works of the modern period has allowed to establish that substitutions in the secondary text representations are considered as a result of the author’s interpretive activities and are implemented at the conceptual and linguistic level. The linguistic material to study substitution means in derivative texts was taken from the English-language press posted on the websites. Means of comparative and interpretative analysis are used as a research method in this paper, which allows to identify ways of lexical, grammatical and semantic substitutions distinctive for the examined sources. It is established that the identified substitutions generally meet the criterion of functional equivalence, i.e. they correspond to the functions of the replaced units, and also preserve the general informative and semantic content of the source text. The paper is a part of the dissertation research.
