Abstract. Toponymic units are a kind of poetic decoration of a nation, a country. They arise in the course of the development of society. They talk about individual historical epochs, about the living people, their history, national identity, about the features of this nation, characteristic of its everyday life. In the Tatar literary and historical monuments of the 17th–18th centuries, many onomastic ones have been preserved. In this article, based on the material of Tatar written sources of the 17th–18th centuries. the toponyms of the Tatar language are considered. In the study of issues of historical phonetics, lexicology and grammar of the Tatar language, a wealth of material can be obtained from the study of toponyms attested in literary and historical sources of the 17th–18th centuries. The relevance of our research is due to the fact that the toponyms of the Tatar language of the 17th–18th centuries. little researched. On the basis of factual material, the author presents an analysis of the semantics and features of the functioning of toponymic units in the written sources of the Tatar language. Based on the analysis, three thematic groups of toponymic units are distinguished: (a) the names of countries and states: Dagestan, Turkestan, Egypt, etc.; (b) city names: Astrakhan, Bilyar, Baghdad, etc.; (c) the names of villages and cities: Almalyk, Kursa, etc. The undertaken research made it possible to identify the main patterns of the formation of the Tatar toponymicon, taking into account the historical, cultural and linguistic characteristics, to establish the dominant features. This study opens up prospects for an in-depth study of Tatar toponymic material based on written records: identifying the patterns of nomination, chronological coverage of toponymic facts in a historical context, comparing the Tatar onomasticon and other Turkic languages.
